Several New Connecticut LEED Registered Buildings

At the end of 2007, I blogged about the growing  number of buildings that were  registered with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) rating system in Connecticut in 2007.  As the real estate market the Connecticut still managed to register thirty-two projects.  That was the good news.  However the state only has fourteen certified as of today. But the LEED registration race in Connecticut is still alive and well.

Recently, several new projects have been registered LEED and several may surprise you.

  • The U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London has registered its Research and Development Center on One Chealsea Street LEED Commercial Interiors.
  • Waypoint is a mixed use property planned for Norwalk by Stanley Seligson. It’s a nineteen acre, six block development that will change the landscape of downtown Norwalk. One building located at 467 West Ave will shoot for LEED New Construction.
  • Some more retail/service spaces are going green.  Last month the Seasons Credit Union registered its Meriden location LEED CI and the last week, The New Cannan Village Plaza registered for LEED NC.
  • There is also another school building to add to the list.  The Math and Technology Center at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford registered last month for LEED Schools.

At this rate the number of LEED registered buildings for the state will be about     twenty-eight or twenty-nine.  I am predicting that the number compared to last year will be down only because this first quarter and maybe the next will show very little activity in the real estate market. Currently the state is in a slow-down mode when it comes to green buildings.  It was only a couple of months ago that I would read of a new green project every three-four days.  These days, it’s more like two a month.

  1. Many CT buildings advertise as LEED buildings and are mentioned on your site, i.e. I-Park in Norwalk. It’s a shame that projects are allowed to promote this rigorous process and are not truly committed to it.
I commend those folks who make the commitment- no more “greenwashing”!

  2. Green Venture Capital, LEED Across the Tri-State, & Sustainable Hotels …

Despite market uncertainty, venture capital is flowing to green construction firms, including Carlstadt, New Jersey-based Hycrete, Inc.
LEED-certified buildings across Connecticut are on the rise
New building for Cumberland County, New Jersey…
